The third Winter Health Camp was held from 5th January to 15th February 2012 in the Boudha Stupa Community Hospital (Kathmandu, Nepal) sponsored by the Dolpo Tulku Charitable Foundation (DTCF) through the kind help of the Nicole Niquelle Foundation (Switzerland) and the Dolpo Tulku e.V. (Germany). Two volunteer doctors from Germany, Dr. Anton Wahter and Dr. Isabel Petzschner, conducted the medical examinations and were supported by Yungdrung Sangmo, Tsering Mentok and Lhakpa Gurung, working for the DTCF.
The camp was organized to provide free medical checkups to the Dolpo people including consultations, investigations, and medicines and also to provide vaccinations, such as Hepatitis ‘B’, de-worming and public talks about important health care topics. …Among 395 Dolpopa tested for Hepatitis B, 73 people were reactive and the remaining 322 non reactive. Those people who are negative were vaccinated the 1st and 2nd dose on 7th January and 8th February. The last dose will be dispensed during the next winter clinic. For everybody, but especially the reactive people, public talks were held twice about hepatitis, especially symptoms, hygiene, their responsibilities according to transmission and possible medications. Moreover awareness programs were organized about STDs (Sexually Transmitted Diseases) for the male Dolpopa and for the female Dolpopa about the female cycle, pregnancy and child birth, regarding unknown problems, hygiene and prevention. They were held separately on 31st January and 1st February in the clinic. Since the majority of Dolpopas suffer from worm infections, public talks on the effects on the body, especially the intestine, and preventive measures were given to Dolpopas in Tarap Hostel (a hostel for Dolpo students studying in Kathmandu). During this occasion worm medication was distributed to 302 people. …
During the duration of the health camp of 302 patients from various parts of Dolpo received medical checkups. Most of the patients were suffering from back pain, joint pain, abdominal problems, such as gastritis, reflux, chest and upper airways infections, such as sinusitis, ear infections, chronic bronchitis, TBC and acute common colds, furthermore headaches, muscle skeletal pain and various affections of other organs, e.g. thyroid gland and prostate. If the symptoms were more serious and complex or the patients needed further examinations, the patients were referred to specialized doctors in the Stupa Community Hospital. …20 female patients were referred to the gynecologist for the treatment of problems with the reproductive organs and related problems …. In addition to above we referred 7 patients to specialist doctors in fields like ENT and Cardiology and 6 patients received physiotherapy for orthopedic problems. Some older patients had to be sent to the dentist and some children needed the attention of a pediatrician. For the first time family planning measures were introduced and we kept Nor Plant in three women to prevent pregnancies. The surplus medicines from Health Camp will be send to the Phoksumdo Health Post during this summer.
The DTCF and the people of Dolpo wholeheartedly thank the Nicole Niquille Foundation and the Dolpo Tulku e.V and other supporters for their generous support and cooperation to run this years' Winter Health Camp successfully. The DTCF hopes to continue the Winter Health camp in future years with the same success in order to serve the people of Dolpo.
With deep gratitude
